Ice Edge Skating Club to Host First-Ever Star 1–3 Figure Skating Competition in Chestermere

The Ice Edge Skating Club (IESC) is taking a big leap onto the competition circuit with its first-ever StarSkate competition, happening Friday, July 18, 2025, from 2:00–8:00 pm at the Chestermere Rec Centre.

This debut event, sanctioned by Skate Canada (Sanction #3501), focuses on Star 1–3 level skaters and promises to highlight the grace, grit, and growing talent of young skaters just beginning their competitive journey. Whether you're a skating family or a local looking for a cool (literally) event to check out, this one's worth circling on your calendar.

What’s On the Ice

Star 1 Element Assessment
No program music, no pressure, just skill execution.
Skaters will be assessed on eight foundational elements, including single jumps (Salchow, Toe Loop), forward and backwards upright spins, and a creative expression routine with music selected by the host club. This event is all about mastering the basics, skating with confidence, and having fun.

Star 2 Program
Skaters perform a choreographed routine to music (max 2:10) featuring nine required elements, like the Waltz + Toe Loop combo, Loop and Flip jumps, and a spiral sequence. Spins and footwork are included and assessed to standard. No age restrictions, and programs are judged on both technical and artistic elements.

Star 3 Program
A full-on Free Skating Program with up to five different single jumps (including an Axel-type), spin combinations, and a spiral sequence. This level demands more complexity, performance, and precision, perfect for those who’ve outgrown the early levels but aren’t yet ready for the higher flights.

Star 2–3 Team Events
Figure skating meets teamwork.
Each team (2–4 skaters) tackles four elements, with each skater responsible for one. Think of it as a relay on skates. The team vibe adds a layer of fun and camaraderie to an already exciting day.

  • Star 2 Team: Loop Jump, Waltz + Toe Combo, Backward Upright Spin, Spiral Sequence

  • Star 3 Team: Flip Jump, Loop + Loop Combo, Combo Spin, Spiral Sequence

Creative Improv 1
Skaters hear a surprise piece of music, get a couple of listens off-ice, one warm-up with it on the ice, and then they’re up—solo, unscripted, and ready to express themselves. No coaching allowed, no props, no pressure (okay, maybe a little). Judged on presentation, variety, and skating clarity.
