Free Chestermere Fire Camps Return This September for Youth Ages 15 to 18
Teens interested in firefighting or emergency services will have the chance to get a firsthand look at the profession this fall as the City of Chestermere Fire Department brings back its annual Fire Camp program.
The free program is open to youth ages 15 to 18 and offers hands-on training, realistic emergency response scenarios, and an inside look at what it's like to serve as a firefighter.
This year's program includes two camps running at the same time:
Ember Fire Camp is designed for young women interested in fire or emergency services. Led by firefighters Hailey Bessette and Rebekah Voisin, participants will take part in hands-on activities while learning about careers in the fire service.
Explorer Fire Camp gives young men the opportunity to train alongside firefighters while building leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills through practical emergency response exercises.
Throughout the weekend, participants will have the opportunity to wear self-contained breathing apparatus, connect to hydrants and operate fire hoses, learn search and rescue techniques, take part in emergency response simulations, and develop teamwork and leadership skills.
Both camps will take place at the Chestermere Fire Station (162 East Chestermere Drive) on:
September 11: 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
September 12: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
September 13: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Participation is free, but space is limited to just 16 participants per camp. Applicants must submit a 250 to 500-word essay explaining why they would like to attend. Returning campers are encouraged to apply for leadership roles, although those positions may also be offered to first-time participants if needed. Successful applicants will need to provide their own CSA-approved footwear.
Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible, as only a limited number of applicants will be accepted.
Questions about the application process can be directed to the City's Fire Department contacts listed on the application page.
