Want to Run the City for a Day? Chestermere Students Can!
Have a great idea to make Chestermere even better? Think you’ve got what it takes to lead a city, at least for a day? Now’s your shot.
The City of Chestermere invites students in grades 6 through 9 to apply for their Mayor for a Day contest. It’s more than just a cool title, you’ll get to shadow Mayor Shannon Dean, learn how the city ticks, and share your vision for Chestermere’s future. From city planning to parks and recreation, no idea is too big (or small).
If chosen, you won’t just be shaking hands and smiling for the camera (though, yeah, that’s part of it). Here’s what’s in store:
A mock inauguration ceremony to kick things off and officially swear you in.
The chance to join city staff for a look at real, non-confidential daily operations.
A one-on-one sit-down with Mayor Shannon Dean to chat about the issues that matter most to you.
Sweet City of Chestermere swag to take home.
And yes, lunch is on the city.
But first, to apply, you’ll need to bring your best ideas to the table. Students must present a mock proposal to the Community Services team and Mayor Shannon Dean. Your proposal can focus on anything you’re passionate about—from health and wellness, to education, to parks and recreation. Let your imagination and critical thinking skills shine!
The goal? To get youth thinking about community involvement and local government, and to let them know their voices matter. It’s also a chance to sit in the mayor’s chair, attend real (non-confidential) meetings, and maybe even inspire some grown-ups with your fresh take.
Applications are open until May 30, 2025. If you're ready to share your vision for Chestermere, apply today at thecityofchestermere.ca.
Because who says mayors have to be old enough to drive?
