A new junior hockey team is coming to Chestermere, and the Chestermere Mustangs are looking for local families who can help make the players feel at home.
The Mustangs compete in the USPHL Premier Alberta Division, bringing junior hockey to the community and allowing young athletes to pursue their hockey goals while continuing their education and building important life skills.
But a junior hockey team needs more than players, coaches and fans. It also needs billet families in Chestermere.
What does it mean to be a billet family?
Billeting means opening your home to a Mustangs player for the hockey season, which runs from September through March.
Players are between 16 and 20 years old and may be coming to Chestermere from outside the community. For a young athlete adjusting to a new city, having a welcoming home can make a huge difference.
A billet family provides a safe, stable place to live and becomes part of the player's support system throughout the season.
Billet families provide:
A private, furnished bedroom
Three healthy meals a day
Access to laundry and internet
A supportive and welcoming home environment
Encouragement and consistency as the player adjusts to a new city
Open communication with the player's parents and Mustangs staff
The goal isn't simply to provide a room and meals. It's about treating the player like family and giving them a home base where they can feel comfortable, supported, and focused on both hockey and school.
What isn't your responsibility?
Billet families aren't expected to take on the financial responsibilities that belong to the player's family.
The player's family remains responsible for:
Hockey equipment
Cell phone costs
Vehicle expenses
Medical expenses
Transportation
Billet families receive $750 per month in reimbursement.
There are expectations on both sides
Like any household arrangement, successful billeting depends on clear expectations and mutual respect.
Chestermere Mustangs players are expected to:
Respect their billet family, household rules and curfew
Keep their room clean and help with household chores
Attend school, practices and games
Follow a zero-tolerance policy for drugs, alcohol, vaping and smoking
Represent the Chestermere Mustangs professionally at all times
The Mustangs also have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, hazing, abuse, violence and discrimination.
Families are not expected to navigate concerns on their own. Any concerns can be raised with the Mustangs' Billet Coordinator, and every report is taken seriously. The Billet Coordinator can also walk prospective billet families through the full handbook, answer questions and explain what to expect before getting started.
Could your family be a billet family?
You don't need to be a hockey expert to make a difference.
If you have a spare bedroom, enjoy having young people around and can provide a stable, supportive home during the hockey season, becoming a junior hockey billet family could be a great way to get involved with Chestermere's newest hockey team.
It's also a pretty unique way to become part of the local hockey community. You may gain a new member of the household, a few more stories around the dinner table and, quite possibly, a reason to care a whole lot more about the Mustangs' next game.
