6 Easy Halloween Crafts and Activities for Kids

Looking for fun, affordable ways to keep the kids entertained this Halloween? Whether you're in Chestermere or nearby, these six simple crafts and activities are perfect for a cozy afternoon at home. Most can be made with supplies you already have around the house, no big craft store trip needed.

1. Creature Bowling

Turn old coffee cans or containers into spooky bowling pins! Yogurt containers and solo cups will work as well. Paint them to look like monsters, mummies, or ghosts. For younger kids, use stencils to help with painting. To make a mummy, wrap the can in strips of old terry cloth, gauze or toilet paper. Grab a small ball and let the bowling begin, instant Halloween fun for the whole family.

2. Bats on the Wall

Add a little Halloween flair to your home with a flutter of paper bats. Print a bat template, like this one, trace it onto black cardstock, and cut them out. For a 3D look, fold each bat down the centre, then bend the wings in opposite directions. Use tape or sticky tack to hang them on the wall or across a doorway.

3. Spooky Cauldron Sensory Game

Kids love a little mystery! Fill a large bowl or pot with cooked noodles and add a splash of oil to keep the noodles from getting sticky. Put small Halloween toys like plastic spiders, eyeballs, or rings in with the noodles. Let your kids dig in to find the hidden treasures. It’s slimy, silly, and sure to get some giggles.

4. Ghost Suckers

A classic that never gets old! Wrap a tissue over a lollipop, tie it with thread, string or even a pipe-cleaner, and then draw two eyes to make a little ghost. They make adorable Halloween treats to hand out to friends, neighbours, or trick-or-treaters.

5. Monster Playdough

For a candy-free Halloween activity, try monster playdough. Make (or buy) a batch of playdough and include a few fun accessories like pipe cleaners, googly eyes, and pom-poms. Kids can build their own silly monsters, tear them apart, and start again. Store everything in a small zipper bag for easy clean-up or party favours.

Easy No-Cook Playdough Recipe:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup salt

  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • 1 ¼ cups boiling water

  • Food colouring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, salt, and cream of tartar) in a bowl.

  2. Add vegetable oil and boiling water, then stir until it comes together.

  3. Once cool enough to handle, knead until smooth.

  4. Add food colouring if desired.

6. Ghost Balloons

These make great Halloween decorations for parties or windows! Blow up a white balloon, draw a ghost face with a marker, and attach white streamers or tissue paper strips to the bottom. Tape them to walls or ceilings for a floating ghost effect that looks great in photos.
