Pass the Shamrock: A Flexible Preschool Fine Motor Game for Any Holiday
By the Chestermere Playschool
Discover why the Chestermere Playschool is a top choice for families seeking a Chestermere preschool with play-based learning and caring educators.
For St. Patrick’s Day, we played a fun game called Pass the Shamrock. It’s easy to adapt for any theme or holiday, and all you need are clothespins and an item to pass around.
The students sat in a circle, each holding a clothespin. The goal was to pass the shamrock around using only the clothespins. No hands allowed.
This activity helps strengthen the hand muscles used for printing, encourages a pincer grasp, and gives kids a chance to practise patience. It looks simple, but it’s trickier than it seems.
Another version we like to play is called Don’t Ring the Bell. Instead of a shamrock, we pass around a hand bell as slowly and carefully as possible, trying not to make a sound. Spoiler: it rarely stays quiet for long.
