A Sweet Treat Craft from the Chestermere Playschool
We love to take a simple craft idea and use it in many different ways or adapt it to varying abilities between our classes.
First, we printed out the shape of a scoop of ice cream and then cut up unbleached paper towels to use as cones as the base of our crafts.
The simplest way to decorate the ice cream is with felt-tip pens or crayons. Try to encourage an age-appropriate grasp of the crayon. If they are still switching back and forth between hands, that’s okay! We remind students to stick with either their left or right hand until they finish each project. Using paint or bingo markers is also fun!
Adding different materials and textures makes crafts more interesting to make and look at. Try glueing cotton balls or make-up pads onto the cones; these can be coloured with markers or even paint that has been thinned out and dripped onto the cotton balls.
Craft time is a great way to help kids strengthen their fine motor skills, preparing them to learn to print their names. Try tearing tissue paper into little squares and scrunching them up into balls, and glueing them onto the ice cream.
Registrations for the 2025/26 school year are now being accepted. The Chestermere Community Playschool is excited to participate in the new Affordability Grant and subsidy program, making quality, play-based preschool more accessible to all the families in Chestermere.
